How Do I Plan IVF in Kolkata If I Live Outside the City?

How Do I Plan IVF in Kolkata If I Live Outside the City?

In brief: IVF from another city is possible with a written plan. One US centre’s guidance gives 9 to 12 days of stimulation with 5 to 6 monitoring visits. Some blood tests or scans may be done nearby if your clinic agrees. Egg collection and embryo transfer need the clinic team, so plan travel around them.

Distance Changes the Plan, Not the Medical Steps

Living far from the clinic makes IVF harder to organise. It does not change the medical steps. Your job is to learn the dates early, arrange what can be done near home, and keep the clinic team informed.

How Many Visits, and Which Ones Can Be Local?

The table shows the usual stages. Your clinic decides which steps are safe to do elsewhere.

StageHow it usually goesCan it be done closer to home?
Consultation and first testsIn person, with the doctorUsually in person. Ask your clinic.
Stimulation monitoring5 to 6 visits for scans and blood tests over 9 to 12 days¹Possibly, if the clinic accepts a local lab or scan centre and the results reach the clinic quickly. Only with written approval.
Egg collectionOne procedure at the clinicIn person, with the clinic team.
Embryo transferOne procedure at the clinicIn person, with the clinic team.
Pregnancy blood testBlood test 10 to 14 days after transfer¹Ask whether a local lab can do it and send the result to the clinic.

Some steps need in-person clinical care. Do not assume any scan or test is acceptable locally until your clinic says so in writing.

Planning the Schedule Across Distance

  • Ask for the full list of expected dates before you book travel.

  • Ask for date windows, not single dates. Stimulation can shift the schedule.

  • Keep one calendar with the clinic’s phone number and every procedure date.

  • Where you can, choose travel bookings that allow changes.

Stay Planning

Book a place to stay near the clinic for the days around monitoring and procedures. Ask the clinic how close you need to be before and after each procedure.

Accommodation options: Contact Renew Healthcare’s patient support team to ask about accommodation and travel-planning assistance before booking your stay.

Travel Timing Around Stimulation and Transfer

During stimulation

Most stimulation medicines are injections. Check the storage instructions on the label, or ask your pharmacist. Some medicines need a cool bag for the journey. Ask your clinic whether travel needs any changes during stimulation.

Around egg collection

Plan to be near the clinic on the collection day. Ask how long you should stay in the area after the procedure.

After embryo transfer

Do not rely on a general travel rule from the internet. Ask your clinic whether there are any limits after transfer, and when your pregnancy test is. Plan your return home after you have that answer.

What to Carry

  • The written monitoring plan and the clinic’s phone numbers.

  • A list of all your medicines, exactly as your doctor prescribed them.

  • Injection supplies and a cool bag, if the label or your pharmacist advises.

  • Copies of previous scan, blood and semen reports.

  • Identity papers and any insurance or payment papers you have.

  • The contact details of a doctor or hospital near where you will be staying.

Between Visits: What You Can Do

  • Take medicines exactly as prescribed. If you are unsure, call the clinic before you miss or change a dose.

  • Keep a short symptom diary. Note any swelling of the belly, your weight, how much you are passing urine, and any breathing or leg problems.

  • Ask the clinic what food and fluid advice applies during stimulation.

  • Keep copies of every scan and blood test result.

  • Confirm how your clinic sends results to you, and whether a phone or message update is possible.

Emergencies While Away

Stimulation can cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Symptoms often start within a week of injections, though sometimes it takes two weeks or longer. Mild cases usually settle within about a week. If you become pregnant, symptoms may last longer and can get worse.²

Get emergency care close to where you are if you have:

  • Trouble breathing.

  • Pain in one or both legs.

These can be urgent. Then call your clinic.

Call your clinic straight away if you have:

  • Rapid weight gain of more than 1 kg in 24 hours.

  • Severe abdominal pain.

  • Severe, persistent nausea and vomiting.

  • Passing much less urine than usual.

  • A tight or enlarged abdomen.

  • Blood clots.

Use the clinic’s after-hours number if it has one. If these signs get worse, seek local emergency care. Tell any local doctor that you are having IVF treatment in Kolkata, and show them your medicine list and your clinic’s contact details.

Ask Your Clinic for a Written Monitoring Plan

Ask for the following in writing before you travel:

  1. The full list of visits, with dates or date windows.

  2. Which scans and tests can be done locally, and who must approve them.

  3. How results will reach you, and how fast.

  4. Who to call after office hours, and what to do if you miss a dose.

  5. What is covered in the price list. Request an itemised IVF treatment estimate from the clinic before booking travel.

  6. What to do if OHSS symptoms start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do all my monitoring in my own city?

Sometimes, some of it. Your clinic must decide which scans and blood tests can be done locally, and it must accept the results. Egg collection and embryo transfer are done by the clinic team. Ask for this in writing before you start.

How long do I need to stay near the clinic?

There is no single answer. The stay depends on your treatment plan, how your body responds, and the procedure dates. Ask your clinic for the expected stay around each procedure, and book in a way that allows changes.

Can I travel by plane after embryo transfer?

Do not rely on a general rule. Ask your clinic whether there are any limits after transfer, and what to do if symptoms start while you are travelling. The clinic can answer for your own treatment.

What if my stimulation schedule changes?

Changes are common, because each person responds to medicine differently. Ask the clinic how it will tell you about changes, and keep your phone and messages available during stimulation.

Is some bloating during stimulation normal?

Some discomfort can happen. Tell your clinic about any symptom, even a mild one. Clinics watch for sudden weight gain and worsening symptoms, so early reports help.²

Which symptoms mean I need help now?

Trouble breathing and pain in one or both legs need urgent local care. Rapid weight gain, severe belly pain, severe vomiting, passing very little urine, a tight belly or blood clots need an immediate call to your clinic. If they get worse, seek local emergency care.²

The Bottom Line

IVF from another city works best with a written plan. Ask which steps can be done near home, plan stays around the procedure dates, and carry your medicines and reports. Know the OHSS warning signs and who to call. Your clinic should confirm every part of the plan in writing before you travel.
